Feather Trimmed Red Guipure Lace Coat (squawking obligatory)

Red guipure lace coat with feather trim

Bess in her not-very-over-the-top coat at all made using red guipure lace and 6″ feather trim.

The coat was prepared ever so slowly making sure the spots matched and everything would line up properly and then it was izzywhizzied together on the overlocker in about 3 minutes.

Then the feather trim was hand sewn on (Bess’s fingers are still calloused from the needle – that trim has got sticky stuff inside the satin binding (that stop the feathers falling out), it’s not nice to sew!

Then the feather trim was un-picked and sewn on all over again not so tight in an effort to make it hang straight in the middle. It’s almost there, Bess weighed up further hand sewing and the possibility of losing her fingers with her OCD of straight edges and the fingers won.

Then the front edge and neck were bound in fold-over petersham binding which magically saved the jacket from being a bit ‘crafty’ (in the derogatory way) and Bess wore it to her baby step-sister’s wedding.

Also seen: bag made from offcuts of leather and a London bus e-plate. As you do.

Pink Tulle Tutus with Feathers and Sequins

Pale pink tulle ballerina tutus with feathers

Bess made these two tutus for her nieces Kitcat and Miaow with a loose brief of Nutcracker in mind. There are a gazillion layers of tulle gathered and pleated and sewn onto a silk dupion elasticated waistband and embellished with feathers and sequins. Pale pink tulle ballerina tutus with feathers at Chatsworth House

3 colours of tulle were used to get a greater depth to the skirts. A short layer of creamy beige, and second longer layer of sugar pink and a top (longest) layer of very pale pink.

Extra-Lightweight knitted iron-on interfacing

The silk organza trim gave Lulu’s dress just the touch of something special she wanted for her wedding dress without making it too impractical or unsuitable to wear at subsequent posh do’s. A shift is the most flattering of dress, and easy to make fit really well.

Want to know more?

We started the Cloth Club in 2007 back when our website was run by extremely well dressed dinosaurs. We sent out a selection of samples on a quarterly basis (for a fee) and hoped they were what our Cloth Clubbers were looking for.

Roll on 11 years we are recycling our Cloth Club for the modern age. Starting from June 2018 we are taking on new members of sewing enthusiasts and inviting you to choose your own samples, receive one-off member-only offers and get back-up email communication with recommendations of what’s new and inspiring.

We have two types of membership:

1. CLOTH CLUB (ECO)

By signing up to our Eco Cloth Club newsletter you will receive information on new fabrics and haberdashery along with seasonal suggestions and curated collections. For a nominal annual fee of £1 you can request up to 8 samples of any of our fabrics, linings and haberdashery and so long as you order from each selection (minimum order £5) you can request over and over again (no limit).

We understand you won’t always be able to order from your swatches and in those cases you will need to pay a £5 deposit for your next selection, so long as your next order is over £35 your deposit will be returned.

2. CLOTH CLUB (PREMIUM)

By signing up to our Premium Cloth Club newsletter you will receive information on new fabrics and haberdashery along with seasonal suggestions and curated collections. For an annual fee of £30 you can request up to 10 samples per fortnight of any of our fabrics, linings and haberdashery, there is no obligation to buy but we reserve the right to deny renewal of a subscription if the service is used excessively without purchase.

The premium cloth club subscription will start on the 1st of the following month. The 10 samples per fortnight cannot be carried over (you cannot have more than 10 samples in one go).

Sample requests can be placed by telephone, email, or post and whilst we encourage you to look through the website to find specific samples we can also help with selections if you talk to us. Samples will be sent out as soon as possible, usually within 24 hours but at busy times they may take longer.

Please note that as this is a trial service we reserve the right to change the terms and conditions. We will endeavour to make whatever changes fair and transparent but should you have any problems please contact us.

Whilst this new system favours those who have access to a computer we hope to include everyone who would like to join. If you cannot or do not want to access the web we are very happy to discuss your sampling requirements and send out accordingly. We will also do our best to keep you informed of our latest news.
